Garter/Moss Textured Hat Pattern

 Remember this hat?

It also looks like this:

This is the hat that I knit from my first skein of hand-dyed yarn, (first discussed in this post).  I promised I’d write up the post for anyone who was interested in making one of their own…so here it is!  (PS, if you tried out hand-dying for yourself — instructions in this post — this is a perfect project to really showcase your creation!  🙂 )

As mentioned previously, this pattern is based off of the DROPS 104-40b textured hat design, but adjusted for sport or DK weight yarn.  It’s a wonderfully textured, slightly slouchy, EASY hat pattern that even a beginning knitter can tackle.  Plus it’s super cozy.  🙂  What do you think?

Materials: approx. 275 yds. sport weight yarn; 40in. circular needles, US #4

CO 132 sts.

Join to knit in the round.

K2P2 ribbing for approx. 2in. (or to preferred length)

Knit 1in. stockinette

Garter Stitch Section:

10 rows in garter stitch: *knit one row, purl one row in the round*

Knit 1in. stockinette

Moss Stitch Section:

Row 1: *K1, P1* repeat throughout row

Row 2: Knit 1 row

Row 3: *P1, K1* repeat throughout row

Row 4: Knit 1 row

**Repeat Rows 1-4 a total of 6 times (or until desired length)

Set-up Round: *K16, pm, K15, K2tog, pm* Repeat to end of round, (128 sts).

This row will decrease 4 stitches evenly, and divide the hat into 8 even sections of 16 stitches.

Decrease Row: *Knit to 2 sts before marker, k2tog* Repeat to end of round, (8 sts decreased).

Repeat decrease row a total of 14 more times — until there are 16 sts remaining on the needles; (change to DPNs if necessary)

Next Round: *k2tog* Repeat to end of round, (8 sts).

Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts & pull together.  Weave in ends & block if desired.

And there ya go!  Easy peasy!  🙂  If you decide to make this hat (or dye some yarn for yourself!), I’d love to see it!  Tweet me a picture (@thelittlemountyarnco) or post on The Little Mount Yarn Co. Facebook page!

  1. I love that green…really lovely! I have a question or two about the pattern (newbie at knitting). Where is the best place to contact/ask you?

    • Hi Heidi! I apologize for the delayed response…I just saw your comment. No, the moss stitch pattern is correct as written for the texture of this section. It’s not “traditional” moss stitch, I know…but I didn’t want the rows to be crushed on top of one another in the small gauge, so I added plain rows to give some space. Hope that helps! 🙂
